Happy New Year, Dancers! There are 4 items in this edition of Footnotes: 1. Wednesday Company Class 2. January Saturday Class 3. Request for Choreography Proposals 4. Spring Show Auditions! 1. Regular Company Class resumes tonight, January 4th, and this Wednesday will be a regular class. We have a special treat this winter - Vivid Motion will be hosting a mini series of Belly Dance Essentials classes with Jessani! January 1, 18, 25 and February 1. This is during regular Company Class time, 7:00-8:30 pm at Acorn. Yay! Belly Dance Essentials: Vivid Motion veteran, Jessica Means (Jessani), will offer a 4 week series in belly dance technique. Belly dance is so much more than sultry undulations and mystical snake arms, it is an elegant and empowering form of expression with several distinct schools/genres of technical training and a unique cultural context from ancient times to the present day. Despite popular myth, belly dance is also gender neutral! As with all Vivid Motion company classes, dancers of all ages, genders, and ability levels are encouraged to attend. Beginning dancers will learn the basic, elegant movement vocabulary as well as an introduction to the music and history of the dance. Intermediate and advanced students will emphasize strong technique and the development of personal style. Finger cymbals, also known as zills or sagat, will be used in class to help develop a sense of musicality and understanding of the rhythms used in Arabic music. Classes will include a complete warm-up and conditioning segment followed general technique with options for all levels, and original combinations/short choreography segments. Yes, there will be biscuit burners & heavenly buns! Please wear comfortable, non-restrictive clothing suitable for dance class. No skirts or costumes please! Bare feet are preferred. Please bring a scarf or wrap to tie around your hips and zills if you have them. 2. We will be having Saturday Classes this January, from 9:00-11:00 (10:45) am. The plan is for January 7 - Ballet January 14 - Modern January 21 - Yoga with Jill* January 28 - Yoga with Jill* February 4 - Modern *Jill Dennison is a Sivananda yoga teacher; she teaches a classical Hatha Yoga class designed to clear and stimulate the energy systems of the body from the crown down. Anyone who comes to the class needs to bring a mat, bolster, and blanket. She has a few extra items but not much anymore. She is looking forward to teaching Yoga to the group. 3. Spring Show! We are doing Eclipse this spring, which is a ballet choreographed to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. This will be half of the program; the other half will be a dance concert of individual dances. This is where Choreography Proposals come in! If you would like to submit a choreography proposal, please contact me at "mj @ vivid motion . org", and I'll send you the proposal form. We need about 35-40 minutes total of additional dances, so if you have an idea, please submit it! If you are a novice choreographer (or new to us, considered on a case-by-case basis) I may ask you to have a mentor to guide you through the process, but don't let you're being a novice keep you from submitting a proposal!. I need to receive proposals by January 15th, so I have a week to consider and a week to notify and for us to meet before... 4. Auditions! for Vivid Motion's 2012 Spring Show, Eclipse and Spring Dances, will be held on Sunday February 5, from 10:00-11:45 am at Acorn Productions, Dana Warp Mill, 90 Bridge St, Wesbrook. Many styles of dance will be included in this concert; prior experience not needed, but a good attitude and willingness to try are a must!
